History of EMAS

Teong Regional Commander of Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur) was appointed
as the Chairman to oversee the setting up of the department with the help of
Wilayah Regional Officer Mr. Lee Wing Kwong, Mr. Michael Yeow and Klang Area
Commander Mr. Burnard Yeoh.
- Four
ambulances were donated by various corporate companies and organizations.
Two ambulances are stationed in Klang’s Headquarters and two ambulances are
stationed in Wilayah Persekutuan’s Headquarters.

- In September
1998, the Emergency Ambulance Service in Wilayah Persekutuan was fully
operated with employed of four full time staff to run the 24 hrs service and
volunteers helping out during the weekend. Later, the department have 9 full
time staff ( 6 EMT and 2 BFA)
- A control
centre was built to run the operation at National Headquarters. The building
was donated by Y.B. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri A.P. Arumugam (SJAM Wilayah
President) and officiate by Health Minister Y.B. Dato’ Chua Jui Meng on the
14th January 1999.
- The name
Emergency Medical Assistance Service (EMAS) was chosen to replace the
original Emergency Ambulance Service. “EMAS” in malay
language simply means gold, here, the emphasis is given to the importance
of the Golden Hour in the field of pre-hospital emergency care.
- The
department is also proud to be the 1st Emergency Ambulance
Service to achieve the ISO 9002 on the 1st September 2000.
- With the commitments and
efforts putting on the EMAS project by all the parties, the department, EMAS
Wilayah Persekutuan (EMAS WP) has become the well-known pre-hospital
emergency care provider in the region of Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
and Klang, in fact, in the country, who provide quality and professional
pre-hospital care.
