St. John
Ambulance has been involved in emergency care for more than 900 years. St.
John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) is the Non-governmental Organisation (NGO)
with the largest ambulance fleet in the country.
EMAS is already a success in Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala
Lumpur and Klang. Thus, EMAS project was brought to Penang on
year 2005 to continue expand the wishes and mission of SJAM, providing a
better ambulance service to the community. Y.Bhg Dato’ Dr.Yee Thiam Sun was
appointed to chair the EMAS Penang committee
The
department is formed with the objectives:

To establish proper and efficient
emergency ambulance service manned by
well trained personnel.

To compliment existing inadequate
emergency ambulance services of
South West District(Bayan Baru, Bayan
Lepas, Sungai Ara and etc) and reduce the respond time of ambulance to
any emergency.

To train and expose the St. John
Ambulance members in pre-hospital emergency care and to update their
knowledge and skills in Medical and Trauma management.
Emergency
Medical Assistance Service (EMAS) Penang, be the first community-based
emergency ambulance service in the country, with her formation, encourage
and allowing our community to demonstrate the significant role of
volunteerism in the community and the role of business in supporting its
community.
EMAS Penang
is to
station a Class-A
equipped ambulance, with
well-trained ambulance medic within Bayan Lepas area to serve the
community, and reduce the respond time of ambulance to any emergency.
Beside be
the key partner in the emergency service provider to the Penang Hospital,
Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, and local authorities,
St. John Ambulance Malaysia, is committed to share our expertise in first
aid and emergency care through the community projects like EMAS Penang.
Public education,
EMAS Kids programme,
first aid awareness campaign, road show are held to
increase the community awareness in emergency preparedness.
