SJAM Penang activated for Airport Disaster Mock Exercise

SJAM EMAS Penang was called to join in the Penang International Airport (PIA), Air Disaster Mock Exercise on Friday night, 30 November 2007.
The "distress" call came in from the Fire and Rescue Department Bayan Baru Station, to require ambulance support when they received call from PIA. The call reported to have a plane crashed at Runway 04 with 68 passengers and crews on board. PIA is within the EMAS Penang's coverage area, ambulance St.John 2 was dispatched from the EMAS Base at Bayan Baru and arrived the scene in 3 minutes.
Being the first ambulance to arrive, medical site-control was immediately set up to coordinate the following ambulances and report site situation back to the Penang Hospital. Upon received call from PIA on 11.26p.m., Ambulance St. John 1, St. John 3 and St. John 4 were dispatched from St. John Ambulance Penang Headquarters at Jalan Grove, Air Itam to the location for assistant.

Firemen transferring the casualties out from the crashed site to the casualty collecting point to be triaged. Casualties are triaged and tagged with red as the most serious injury; yellow, moderate injury; green, minor injury and black for fatality case. Casualties tagged with red, yellow and green are transferred back to Air Disaster unit (ADU) for medical attention.

The large scale mock exercise was carried out once in two years to test the efficiency and collaboration of the rescue agencies. This year was the first ever mock exercise carried out during late night and involved 600 rescuers from various agencies which includes Malaysia Airport, Fire and Rescue Department, State Health Department, Penang Hospital, St. John Ambulance Malaysia, EMAS Penang, Malaysian Red Crescent and 68 "casualties". 20 SJAM Penang volunteers involved in the exercise.
