Penang State Level Disaster Drill, SJAM Penang activated
Dr. Tan Kean Chye, 3 November
2008

Mangsa lebih 50 orang!... Buses crashed with cars...

A state level disaster drill was held at the premises of Penang Medical College on Sunday, 2nd November 2008.  This disaster drill was organized by the Emergency Department of Penang Hospital. It involved multiple organizations and other private hospitals as well.

Apart from Penang Hospital, Lam Wah Ee Hospital and Penang Adventist Hospital, St. John Ambulance, Malaysian Red Crescent, Malaysian Civil Defence Department also took part in the disaster drill. The disaster drill showed a coordinated effort the various organizations and hospitals in dealing in emergencies.

The Disaster Drill started at 7am in the morning. A total of 54 'casualties' were involved in a multiple vehicle crash (2 buses and few cars) at the vicinity of Penang Medical College. Minutes later, the various ambulances arrived at the scene well coordinated by the Call Centre at Emergency Department.  The 'casualties' were triage based on their severity and managed accordingly. After given basic medical management at the scene, they were then transferred to the 3 hospitals involved in the exercise, mainly Penang Hospital, Lam Wah Ee Hospital and Penang Adventist Hospital.

The official stand down was given at 9.30am. All participants were later debriefed at the seminar room. This is a 1st ever disaster drill involving multiple hospitals and organizations. It is hoped that in future, similar exercises will be held regularly to prepare everyone for a disaster.
