The first in the country,
<First Aid for Kids> programme was first trial run in Penang, with 21 kids
become the “Rescue Angle”.

Brainchild of St. John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) Emergency Medical
Assistance Service (EMAS) Penang, <First Aid for Kids> was conducted, to
equipped kids with the basic in first aid knowledge and skills.
SJAM
Penang State Commander, Dato’ Dr. Yee Thiam Sun said, kids have a strong
learning ability especially between age of 4 to 6 years old. Hence, teaches
them first aid is not a problem.

Although I
am young, I can do bandaging as good as adult!
“Adults
tend to be panic when there is an emergency. So, teach the kids in basic
first aid will help them to build the foundation of first aid. We also hope
that with kids, we can create awareness of first aid among adults as well.
Conflict occurs when an adult try to correct another adult, but the present
of kids will bring positive feedback.”
Programme coordinator, Mr. Oi Siou Hean said, <First Aid for Kids> programme
will not teach the kids about the complicated first aid skills, instead,
basic first aid skills for daily possibility will taught to them. “In this
programme, we stress on the element of ‘Get Help’, such as calling 999, get
help from adults, as well as basic bandaging, wound care and CPR, which is
between the kids ability. Kids may not have the power to perform mouth to
mouth ventilation, but chest compression alone may help to save a life in
the situation without adult.”
The
first kindergarten participated in <First Aid for Kids> programme is
Creative Learning Kindergarten. The principal, Mdm. Ong mentioned that, from
her observation, kids who gone through the <First Aid for Kids> programme
act calm when they get injured. “Feedback from the parents shows that, when
their children fall or get wounds, they did not just cry like before,
instead, the kids manage to clean and bandage their wounds by themselves.”
She also said that the learning of kids should not restricted to academic
knowledge only, but also with other skills like first aid. After the
programme, kids show that they also can cope with the learning of first aid
skills. Her kindergarten did visit to Fire Station too.

Kids are taught in use of triangular bandage too.
SJAM
Penang will continue to conduct this <First Aid for Kids> programme at the
kindergarten in Penang. Dato’ Dr. Yee said that people tends to stress too
much on first aid among adults and forget about the kids. Kids play a
crucial role nowadays especially there is only kids and oldies in home. When
anything happens to the oldies, kids are the one to call for help.

Kids learn
CPR, they may be the one who save an adult life!
<First Aid for
Kids> were planned by SJAM a period time ago, with the experience and
teaching materials too. Now, with the help from the kindergarten teachers,
the teaching methods been enhanced for better kids learning.
