THEY call the campaign
“Give me Five, Save a Life” but it’s not the palm-slapping high five they
mean, but RM5.
St John Ambulance Penang
is organising the campaign to collect donations of at least RM5 per donor to
buy a RM150,000 ambulance for its Emergency Medical Assistance Service (EMAS).
Organising chairman Lee
Thuan Chye said St John members would be going to busy places like shopping
malls, hypermarkets and hawker centres until the end of the year to collect
donations.
For each donation of RM5,
the donor will receive a bookmark and a button badge. For RM10, one will get
a mini decorative shirt or a bottle of soya sauce sponsored by Heng Lee
Sauce Factory.
“Our fund-raisers will
also inform the public about Emas so that they know that they can contact us
if they need emergency help,” said Lee who went round the Cecil Street
market in Penang recently with some St John members to collect donations.
He said the Bayan Baru-based
Emas that was established in 2005 had so far received about 1,500 calls from
people seeking help.
Pengkalan Kota assemblyman
Lee Hack Teik, who was also at the market to support the campaign, hoped the
public would donate generously to the campaign.
“Health and safety are
very important to everyone. St John Ambulance is doing a very honourable
service to the public,” he said
