THE Star celebrated its 36th
anniversary by treating more than 300 employees to a sumptuous buffet spread
at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas yesterday.
In conjunction with the event, the company also gave away RM114, 361.49 to
the Penang branch of the St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) yesterday
The proceeds were collected during last year’s Starwalk Carnival Charity
Concert.
Thanking Star Publications (M) Bhd for its ‘timely’ contribution, SJAM
(Penang) commander Datuk Dr Yee Thiam Sun who was present to receive the
donation, said the money would be used to buy an ambulance for the
association.
“We need at least three Emergency Medical Assistance Service (EMAS)
ambulances to serve the island. These are not just vehicles to transport the
sick but are fully functional and equipped with all the necessary equipment.
“This allows us to administer on-the-spot emergency procedures to patients
before tran-sporting them to the hospital.
“I would like to thank The
Star for its assistance in helping us purchase our first am-bulance. The
company is a very good exam- ple of corporations that are sensitive to the
community’s needs and we are very grate- ful. Hope-fully others will follow
in The Star’s footsteps,” he said, adding that an additio- nal
RM500,000 was needed for its EMAS project.
Also present during the event
were Star Pu-blications regional director (North) Datuk Seri Kamal Hashim,
The Star news editor Tommy Lee, office manager Chin Yoon Foo and the
company’s retired employees.
Besides a cake cutting ceremony,
the mana-gement and employees also sang a ‘birthday song’ to mark the event.
Watches and certificates were
also presented to employees who had served in the company for 15 years
